Art Deco Porcelain Nude Dancer with Snake by Gerold & Co., Tettau, Germany (1920-1937)

A graceful Art Deco figurine of a nude dancer entwined with a gilt serpent, made by Neue Porzellanfabrik Tettau AG, Gerold & Co. The dancer is in white porcelain with green modesty cloth/drapery, and the snake is picked out in gold gilt. The figure stands on a round base.

• Mark: “NP Neu Tettau” with a stylized T that has a pointed vertical bar (see photos)
• Period: 1920-1937, per the backstamp
• Height: 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm)
• Colors: White and green, with a gold gilt snake
• Subject: Nude dancer with snake

Condition: Very good vintage condition. The snake’s scales over the gold gilt show wear at the touchpoints, which is typical for a gilded piece of this age. Gilt missing from snake's nose appears to be a production flaw.  Please see the photos, which are part of the description. Ask if you would like additional photos or close-ups.

Collector Notes

• Similar mold: This figurine shares a similar mold with the Nude Dancer with Snake made by Galluba & Hoffmann of Ilmenau, Thuringia. The Galluba & Hoffmann version has a square base, while this Gerold & Co. version has a round base. This is a useful way to tell the two makers apart, and the round base may be of interest to collectors comparing the two.
• Era: The piece dates from the interwar period, when German porcelain factories produced many stylized dancers and bathing beauties for the Art Deco market.
• Marked piece: The factory mark is clearly present and can be used to confirm the maker and period.
